Liverpool Sound City 10th Anniversary Headliners Announced

Latest News, UK

The blue touch paper has been lit for the party of the decade – the 10th anniversary of the award-winning Sound City – the UK’s largest city based festival.

Having already announced a move to the larger Clarence Dock for 2017, Sound City has also revealed that it will host four days of festivities to mark its special birthday.

The festival launches on Thursday with a celebration of the English avant-garde featuring a trio of some of the most influential British electronic artists of the modern era – The Human League, Art of Noise and A Certain Ratio.

With a remarkable career that spans five decades, The Human League were the vanguard of the electronic new wave in the 70’s developing a sound that changed the face of pop forever.

Said Phil Oakey: “We’re absolutely delighted to be headlining the first night of Sound City’s 10th birthday celebrations. We love playing for the people of Liverpool, they are properly passionate music fans and we’ve always felt at home in their beautiful city and although we haven’t been there yet from what we’ve heard the setting of Sound City’s iconic industrial landscape is pretty unique and will be a perfect backdrop for our music, we can’t wait to play there.”

Support comes from 80’s synthpop innovators Art of Noise featuring Dudley/Jeczalik/Lanagan. They will reboot their classic album In Visible Silence. This will be a world premiere reworking of this groundbreaking album and their first live performance in 17 years.

To complete this Thursday stellar line up are A Certain Ratio. Discovered by the late great Tony Wilson and signed to Factory Records with label mates Joy Division. Hugely important and influential band. ACR continue to innovate to this day.

On Friday global music legend John Cale takes the stage with the only European performance of THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO album. This will mark the 50th anniversary of one of the most important albums of all time. When announced in October last year this historical stand-alone event sold out in just 2 days. However Sound City have announced there are a limited number of additional tickets to be released. With a host of live collaborators still to be announced this show is going to be one of the most culturally significant happenings of the year.

Nu-disco doyens Metronomy top Saturday’s bill. Following last year’s hugely successful Summer 08 the quartet will be treating Sound Citizens to a genre-busting set of sublime electronica packed with hits from five studio albums. Also featured on Saturday’s impressive line-up are lo-fi rockers The Kills, nu-punk upstarts Slaves, art-pop provocateur Peaches, alt rock prodigies The Hunna, Libertines front man Carl Barat & The Jackals, feted electro-rock five piece Pumarosa, Fickle Friends and many more.

Also taking place on Saturday will be a special keynote ‘In Conversation’ piece with John Cale. This rare interview will unveil a wealth of stories and insights accrued over a career of more than 50 years. It will explore his formation of the Velvet Underground with lifelong collaborator Lou Reed. This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to hear the most amazing story in rock and roll from one of the most important figures from the history of popular music.

Indie rockers The Kooks are the perfect finale for this momentous weekend. Having closed the festival in 2014 The Kooks provide a knowing nod to the rich history of Sound City. In support are post-punk trio White Lies, American indie-innovators Local Natives, dance-punk agitators !!! (Chk Chk Chk), newly reformed Milburn, dreamy psych-popsters She Drew The Gun, anarcho-rockers Cabbage, The Sherlocks, Liverpool’s very own psychedelic adventurers The Vryll Society and a host of other diverse and exciting acts.

Said Sound City CEO Dave Pichilingi: “For our big tenth birthday we wanted to do something really special, not just to mark to occasion but also to reward all those loyal Sound Citizens who have come with us on every step of this amazing ten-year journey.

“The term legend is way over-used these days but we really do have bona fide music legends on the bill every single day of the festival and we still have lots more to announce. It’s going to be a rollercoaster ride folks. Get yourself strapped in.”

Our week in Lisbon for Web Summit 2016!

Latest News, Week In Review

Last week we took our first ever trip to Web Summit; Europe’s Largest Technology Marketplace. The event, which was previously held in Dublin has grown considerably over the last 5 years, starting from a 400 capacity event to now attracting over 55,000 people in 2016.

Having read stories online we had an idea of what to expect but we soon found they were far from the truth as soon as we arrived, for all the right reasons. The event was huge.. not only in one arena but also 3 other pavilions conveniently aligned with the MEO Arena. To get to the main arena you had to pass through all the other pavilions – so you didn’t miss out on any aspect of the event; something greatly supported by the startup businesses exhibiting and pitching.

We flew from Manchester to Lisbon and went a day early so we could do some sight-seeing of this old but really beautiful City. Wherever you looked there was mentions of Web Summit and branding all over. Taxi drivers and bar owners told us about how the City was going to be so busy over the next week or so.

On the first night we were greeted by an opening talk from Paddy Crosgrave the brainchild behind Web Summit and the Portuguese Prime minister. They were joined by 200 Portuguese start up businesses that were exhibiting at the event across the 3 days. This opening ceremony was electric as 15,000 crammed into the arena. An additional 3000 people watched on a big screen outside the venue.

The rest of the week was jam packed with talks from some of the biggest names in technology and business, celebrities, musicians and world famous footballers. Then there was the exhibition day which was ridiculously draining but so positive and engaging at the same time.

We met thousands and thousands of people throughout the day and made some brilliant contacts. We saw a surge in downloads after the event (We think it was the freebies that helped!). In our area we were the only music type business so it attracted lots of attention. We even managed to appear on a Facebook live video with our Founder; Dane Swindells being interviewed by Product Hunt Founder Ryan Hoover!

After the exhibition day it was time for the Night Summit and Pub Crawls, something which we tried to put off all week due to having to be awake really early to exhibit! It was brilliant to get to chat to people from all over the world and just enjoy a few drinks whilst chatting about the madness of the last few days. We truly believe we have made some friends for life and brilliant contacts and partnerships we can use moving forward.

We are hoping to head back out to Lisbon next year for Web Summit 2017.

In its short lifetime, Perfect Havoc Disco has been seen globetrotting to dancefloors as far afield as San Francisco and soon in South Korea, as well as on home turf in London at Brixton Jamm and Hoxton Basement. The forthcoming party at Zebrano will showcase the label’s current, in-demand roster and what a night is in store.

First up is Swedish-born Tobtok. His unique house and nu-disco production have been released via Kitsuné and Atlantic, and most recently Tobtok signed a long term single deal with Ministry of Sound, which kick started with his Hype Machine #2 single ‘Aber’. His remix, production, and DJ credits are exhaustive and impressive, with the most recent successes including going Platinum in Australia with his classy take on ‘Fast Car’, remixing ‘Telepathy’ by Christina Aguilera feat. Nile Rogers, releasing his ‘Ibiza 2016’ compilation on Cr2 Records, and playing alongside Avicii at Ushuaia this summer to name just a few.

Fellow Swede, Oliver Nelson, can also do no wrong when it comes to flawless production. His current fan base on Soundcloud alone exceeds 108,000 followers, where his Hype Machine #1 track ‘Changes featuring River’ has clocked over 600,000 plays and 427,000 streams over on Spotify, showcasing his ever-growing popularity. With a headline tour of the USA under his belt and countless remixes, Oliver continues to impress with his latest track ‘Ain’t A Thing Featuring Kaleem Taylor’ premiered by Mark Knight on the Toolroom Records podcast, his ‘Croatia Poolside 2016’ compilation on Toolroom, and a remix of the tune-of-the-summer ‘Sexual’ by Neiked.

Their latest release ‘Coming Back Featuring Javi’ was released on Perfect Havoc and has now racked up over 427,000 streams on Spotify, peaking at No. 7 on the UK Viral Spotify Chart.

Perfect Havoc label boss, Adam Griffin, will also spin on the night, applying his skills as an A&R to crafting danceable DJ sets. Always a favourite with crowds at Perfect Havoc Disco, Adam brings an eclectic mix of house music to the floor, seen most recently at the Brixton Jamm relaunch, Kitsuné at The Miranda Club (Ace Hotel) in London, and at the 1015 Folsom in San Francisco at Perfect Havoc Disco.

Further breaking talent on the night comes in the form of Osmo, a DJ and producer born in Uppsala, Sweden, the hometown of Tobtok and Oliver Nelson. His debut track ‘Le Parc’ was premiered by Toolroom and garnered heavy support from the likes of Gigamesh and Timmy Trumpet thanks to its tougher sound. Osmo’s follow up single ‘Take Your Time Feat. Ayelle’, drew further interest from the respected house label, making its way onto Toolroom’s Croatia Poolside compilation and premiered on the label’s podcast.

Newcomer, Clear Six, will also take the stage at Perfect Havoc Disco. His debut record ‘Sunshine Featuring Curtis T Johns’, was one of the biggest tunes this summer, released on Tough Love’s label Get Twisted (via Columbia Records), and he even found time to remix ‘Changes’ for stablemate, Oliver Nelson. Clear Six follows up with ‘Rescue Me Featuring Dija Bhlue’ on Perfect Havoc, a track already set for big things with an impressive 232,000 streams on Spotify and plays on KISS.

Zander is the latest and youngest signing to Perfect Havoc and completes the line-up for the November event.
